WOLF LAKE HISTORICAL MYSTERIES

Study of the Wolf Lake Story has uncovered explanations of several prominent Lake mysteries.

(1) The MC dam was completed in 1911; what was the Wolf Lake water level before the dam was built?

A 1903 picture advertising North Shore cottages (Cit Pat 6/5/1903) gives an answer - click here

(2) How did Mack Island get its name?

The Cit Pat of 5/26/1914 tells how "The Millen" became thereafter "Mack Island" - click here

(3) Oil drilling under Wolf Lake!

In 1860, the Michigan Supreme Court defined Riparian Rights (see Riparian), saying “the soil under such tideless public rivers to the thread of the stream is in the owner of the adjacent bank.” But recent oil drilling under Wolf Lake has led the City of Jackson to claim (and be paid over $140000) for such rights. This claim may be challenged eventually –thru 2012 the sub-Lake drilling has produced only two dry holes. But a person in 1915 claimed to own the right to sell the bottomland in the ENTIRE MC Chain to Jackson! How did he get away with it? Money? Influence? Moxy? Or other? You judge; read about the man largely lost in local history. click here
